PORTO (Portekiz)

Bazı yerler vardır, bir gün görebilmeyi yıllarca hayal ederiz. Örneğin filmlerde defalarca karşımıza çıkan Paris, New York, Londra bu tür yerlerdir.

Eiffel'in köprüsü

Porto kenti ızgara planla yapılmış, yani caddelerin sokakları dik açıyla kestiği bir kent değil. Bu açıdan biraz İstanbul'a benziyor demek fazla abartılı olmaz. Sahile iner inmez Eiffel'in yaptığı 'Ponte de D. Luis I' karşıma çıktı.

Perge ( Antalya )

Çağlar boyu Anadolu kadını tanrıça, yargıç, savaşçı gibi değişik rollerde görülür. Ana tanrıçalar, Asur Ticaret Kolonilerinden Kültepe'deki (İ.Ö. 2000) ticaret yargıçları, Priene yargıçları, Amazonlar, Büyük İskender'in emriyle Miletos'un fethinden sonra savaşçıların evlendiği eğitimli askerler...

THE CIRAGAN PALACE

The best sites along the Bosphorus and the Golden Horn had been reserved for the palaces and mansions of the sultans or important personalities. Most of these, however, have disappeared in time. One of these, the large Crragan Palace, burned down in 1910.

The palace, replacing an earlier wooden palace, had been built in 1871 for Sultan Abdula'ziz by court architect Serkis Balyan. The construction took four years and cost four million gold pieces.

The ceilings and the interior partitions were made of wood, the walls were covered by marble. The columns were superior examples of stonemasonry. The palace was lavishly decorated with rare carpets, gilded pieces and furniture inlaid with mother-of-pearl.

Like other palaces on the shores of the Bosphorus, the Ciragan had been the venue of various important meetings. Its facades were decorated with colored marbles, it had monumental gates, and it was connected to the Yildiz Palace on the slopes behind it with a bridge.

On the landside it was surrounded by high walls. After remaining in ruins for many years, the palace has been renovated and turned into a 5-star seashore hotel with several new additions.

THE YILDIZ PALACE

This is a complex of pavilions and gardens scattered over a large area of hills and valleys overlooking the Bosphorus and surrounded by high walls. This second largest palace in Istanbul is now separated into various sections, each serving a different purpose. The 500,000 sq. m grove had always been reserved for the court, and the first mansion built here in the early 19th century was quickly followed by others. When Sultan Abdulhamid II, who was an overly suspicious person, decided that this palace offered better security, the complex soon developed into its present form.

During his thirty-three year reign, the sultan used this well-protected palace resembling a city within a city as his official quarters and harem. The different courtyards containing pavilions, pools, greenhouses, aviaries, workshops and servants' quarters were separated from each other by passageways and gates. There are two small and charming mosques situated outside the two main entrances.

The buildings that were allocated to the higher military academy have been vacated now. The facilities to the north are still used for military purposes, but the other sections have been assigned to the use of the Yildiz Technical University, the municipality, the Department of National Palaces, and the Institute for Research in the History of Islamic Arts and Cultures.

The large part of the palace gardens, some old pavilions and the famous porcelain workshops are open to the public in what is now called the Yildiz Park. The park is connected to the Ciragan Palace on the seashore with a bridge. The best-known building in the complex, the Sale (chalet) Pavilion, is reached through the park. The pavilion is an important museum with its well-kept gardens, its exterior architecture resembling Alpine hunting lodges, its rich decorations, valuable furniture, carpets, and large ceramic stoves.

The main entrance of the Yildiz Palace is up the hill from Besikta§. The Muayede Pavilion to the left of the entrance is now being renovated as a new museum. Also on the left side are the single-storied Qt Pavilion, where the guests of the sultan were accommodated, and the entrance to the harem. On the opposite side stood the offices of the military officers in charge, the Yaveran chambers. The greenhouse and the theater in the harem section are attractive examples of their kind.

The staff dining room to the right of the entrance was later used to exhibit weapons collections. Today exhibitions and concerts take place here.

The Yildiz Palace Museum and the Municipal Museum of Istanbul are also in this complex. The Palace museum was founded in 1994 and it occupies the former carpentry workshops. Carved and painted wooden artifacts, thrones, porcelain produced in the palace workshops, and other objects from the palace are exhibited here, while in the Municipal Museum next to it glass and porcelain wares, silverware, paintings depicting Istanbul and a rare 16th century oil lamp are on display.

Chasing the wind at Dubrovnik Riviera

Home to 1200 islands, the Dalmatian Coast is a sailor's paradise. In August, we set sail from Marmaris to the Adriatic Sea.

Mali Ston, wine and cheese
Our first stop in Croatia was Mali Ston, about 60km from Dubrovnik. The waters of Mali Ston are very clean and ideal for oyster farming. The next day, we set sail for Cavtat. After the Great Wall of China, Cavtat has the world's second longest defensive walls. The region is famous for its sea salt and cottage wine industry. Our first stop on the Adriatic was the ACI Marina in Dubrovnik. Here, we stocked up on supplies for our journey. By a strange coincidence, we ran into an old friend of one of our shipmates. Based on his knowledge of the area, we decided to change our Adriatic course.

Maria's island

In the morning, we set sail at full speed. At about 15.00, we caught sight of the small island of Lopud. Back when Dubrovnik was an independent city-state, the aristocrats had their summer homes on Lopud. Lopud is one of the few islands to have a beach and is covered in trees. No motor vehicles are allowed on the island. We stopped here for a meal and were served by a cheerful waitress named Maria. For the rest of the trip, we renamed Lopud "Maria's Island" in her honour. We spent that and every subsequent evening sipping Lopud wine on deck. The next morning, we woke to discover that we had the bay to ourselves. We set sail for our next stop, Mljet. Two boisterous dolphins joined us for a part of the journey.

Turkish folk songs

The island of Mljet is a protected national park that has two saltwater lakes but no fresh water. The next day, we enjoyed a day of sailing before anchoring in Vera Luka Bay on the island of Korcula. Korcula boasts the cleanest waters of the coast. We all fell in love with the nearby island of Sipan. After two whole days on deck, we headed to the shore for dinner. The restaurants on both islands proved to be full, but we luckily discovered a tiny bakery that sold a local version of borek. It was run by an Albanian man in his seventies. Hearing us speak Turkish, he started to sing a half-remembered Turkish folk song. The next morning, we woke at dawn and went for a walk. The road was lined with fruit trees and we helped ourselves to grapes, peaches, apricots and figs on our way. The figs were particularly delicious. In the afternoon, we went for a swim to escape the baking heat. Sadly, the seabed was littered with old car tyres and empty bottles. Nevertheless, we were loath to leave Korcula. However, the time had come to return to Dubrovnik. Once there, we spent out last night on the ship and drank a toast to the beauties of the Dalmatian Coast.

The grave of a genius

Figueres is a fascinating Spanish town 1.5 hours from Barcelona by train. In the town centre stands the old theatre which survived the Spanish Civil War but burned down in 1939. Later, it was bought and redesigned by Salvador Dali who had held his first exhibition here when he was only 14 years old. In 1960, he decided to open it as a museum, despite opposition from the locals. Supported by the mayor Guardiola, it opened in 1974.

Walking across the grave of a genius

The main hall of the museum has a glass globe for a ceiling. The right hand wall is covered in a 420x317cm digitised picture of Abraham Lincoln. On closer inspection, the picture reveals a hidden nude figure looking out to sea. This is Gala-Dali's muse, guardian angel, lover and wife after 1958. In the centre of the red brick floor of the main hall lays a white marble slab. Many visitors to the museum nonchalantly walk across it. Few of them know that this is Dali's grave. Dali enjoyed shocking people when alive; in death, he seems to be having the last laugh with his incongruous grave.

Lip couches and a "Rainy Cadillac"

Upstairs is the Mae West Room. It has red walls, a red couch, two black&white photographs and a yellow triumphal arch. In the far right stands a staircase. At the top hangs a huge lens. Through it, you suddenly see the face of Mae West, the 30s film star. The arch is her hair, the couch her lips, the furniture her nose? From the ceiling, a complete bathroom with a bathtub, chair, chest of drawers and a book hangs upside down. In the centre of the interior courtyard stands a black 1940s Cadillac with a statue of a driver and passenger inside. Behind it is a column made of truck tires. If you insert 10 pesetas into a slot beside the car, you'll have the shock of your life. Let's just say that the name of the work is "Rainy Cadillac".

The pickings of the Bread Basket

Downstairs is a low-lit room lined with black curtains filled with the jewellery Dali designed for Gala. Behind a wall decorated with a cross and the words 'Salvador Dali Domeneci, Pubol Markisi, 1904-1989' lies the grave of Dali: a lifelong imperialist who never wore a watch yet was never late, who didn't believe in god but loved all people and who courted scandal. The museum also houses the painting that brought Dali fame at a young age: "The Bread Basket". Thanks to this work, Dali opened his first private exhibition in 1929 in Paris. He was invited to join the Surrealists until he was kicked out after a fight with its leader, Breton. Every work in this uniquely personal museum/mausoleum brings the visitor closer to appreciating the unique personality who created it.

The Istanbul Archaeological Museum is home to an 8,000-year-old 15cm statue of a goddess. Seated on a throne, she is a robust, large-breasted, fleshy figure. While researching my doctoral thesis on "Anatolian Goddesses", I had the opportunity to hold many such figures in my hands.

Neolithic Stone Age women

The statute in the Istanbul Archaeological Museum was made by Neolithic artists. These people had only recently left their caves to set up small villages. They were moving from hunting and gathering to farming. The Neolithic people equated abundant harvests with female fertility. A cult of fertility developed and statues of goddesses with large breasts, large stomachs and wide thighs were carved to represent sex and fertility.

Nameless mother goddesses

Many of the Neolithic statues found in Anatolian archaeological digs seem to be holding their milk-swollen breasts. Some look pregnant. Some breast-feed children. Statues depicting scenes of copulation were first found in Catal Hoyuk. Research has shown that the Neolithic people understood the origins of life and believed in the sanctity of family life. As women had the power to give birth, they were considered sacred. Statues of goddesses depicted with a lion or leopard symbolise her role as authoritarian protector. This matriarchal faith continued for thousands of years in Anatolia. After the discovery of bronze in the 4000 BC, cities were formed. With cities came politics and war, and the age of male aggression. Men's role in society became more dominant, but women remained the symbol of fertility and abundance. Early Bronze Age goddesses were also naked, but their hair was tied up, they had small, high breasts, small stomachs, narrow waists, wide thighs and large reproductive organs. Written language was introduced to Anatolia in 2000 BC. Records show that these mother goddesses were equated with the sun. The Hittites created a hierarchy of goddesses lead by one goddess. During the Late Hittite State, she was known as Kubaba. Kubaba was renamed Kybele by the Frigians.

Artemis the Shrew

Around 500BC, Ancient Greek culture dominated Anatolia and the goddess became known as Artemis. The famous many-breasted statue of Artemis of Ephesus symbolises her fertility. However, Artemis was better known as a protector. Her bow and arrow represented her power over nature. As the beautiful virgin huntress, Artemis was also the image of unattainable perfection. One story goes that she killed a young man who saw her naked while she was bathing. She pitied him and turned him into a stag and kept him with her. A marble carving depicting this myth is on display at the Louvre. A few rooms away stands a statue of Aphrodite, another Mediterranean goddess.

Efes'in meşhur yumurta şekilli bol göğüslü Artemis'i, bereketi böyle sembolize etti.

The beautiful Aphrodite

Unlike the proud virgin Artemis, Aphrodite was the goddess of love and beauty, femininity and fertility. Her face may be lowered bashfully, but Aphrodite is famous for being an outrageous flirt. Aphrodite was born from a oyster shell in Cyprus and is named after Aphros, the Greek word for sea foam. She was young and beautiful, unlike the Neolithic fertility goddesses. She was also less powerful. The powers of the omnipotent mother goddess were split among the many Greek and Roman goddess. The goddess Tykhe represented fertility and good fortune. Hekate was the goddess of death and night. She was later known as the doorkeeper of Hades.
When the Byzantines adopted monotheism, the goddess disappeared, only to be replaced by the Virgin Mary.
But, since Islam prohibits religious iconography, the goddess or female saint has no place in the religion.

1100-year-old temple

Made up of over 13,000 islands, Indonesia is the largest archipelago in the world. The temple of Borobudur is located in the middle of the main island of Java. This massive Buddhist temple dates back to 842. Although it may not be one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World, it is a truly wondrous sight. The temple is set on a small natural rise and is shaped like a ziggurat with a rectangular base. The temple has 10 levels-each level representing a stage in the process of reaching nirvana. Originally, the temple was painted with garish colours that would have made its carved figures seem even more vibrant. Nevertheless, it remains deeply moving and beautiful, albeit in its rather faded glory. The best time (though also the most crowded) to visit is at sunrise and sunset.

The three graces of the Aegean

In his famous writings, Herodotus describes the unparalleled beauties of Ionia. He waxes lyrical about its gorgeous sky and matchless climate. Today, the region once known as Ionia covers the area from Izmir Foca to Aydın Soke. It is just as stunning now as it was in ancient times. Perhaps the most beautiful ancient settlement on the western shore of Anatolia is Priene. Located at the foot of the Samsun (Mykale) Mountain, the city has a spectacular view of the Meander Delta and the Aegean Sea.

Rich as Croesus

Although Priene was a small city, it played an important role in the Ionian League. Firstly, it was home to Panionion, the annual religious meeting place of the league. Secondly, Bias-one of the seven sages of antiquity-came from Priene. Bias is most celebrated for saying that "Wisdom should be cherished as a means of travelling from youth to old age, for it is more lasting than any other possession". Bias also features in a legend about King Croeses. Having extorted regular payments from the Ionian cities on the mainland, Croesus decided to deploy warships against the Ionian islands. Bias misled Croesus into believing that the Ionians were preparing 10,000 horses for a raid on Sardis. Croesus was pleased since the Lydians would probably triumph in a land battle. Bias astutely pointed out that the Ionians were superior fighters by sea, and would thus triumph if the Lydians attacked with their warships. Croesus was so impressed by Bias?s logic that he gave up the idea of attacking the islands.

Fate dictated by water

When it was established in 350BC, Priene was on the shore of the Aegean and near to the islands, making it an ideal centre of trade. However, the shore was gradually silted up by alluvium carried by the Meander River. By the 13th century, the city was deserted. Priene was designed by the renowned city planner Hippodamos on a grid pattern. The Temple of Athena with its restored columns is still an imposing structure, acting as a doorway between the Samsun Mountain behind it and the infinite vista of the sea stretching out in front. The requisite amphitheatre was built in the 3rd century BC and seated 5000 people. The front row has 5 seats that were reserved for the leading figures of the city. Plus, there is an altar where sacrifices were made to Dionysus-god of wine and theatre-before a performance. The square holes were used to hold up tents that protected the audience from the rain or beating sun.

How to get there

Take the Izmir, Selcuk,Soke road. After Soke, turn at the Priene sign. Priene is 25km away. Doganbey and Karine are 10km apart up the same road. Minibuses from Soke go to Gullubahce, near Priene. No public transport to Doganbey and Karine.

Where to stay

Gullubahce has a few pensions, but there are many options in Selcuk, Soke, Didim and Akbuk--near enough for a day trip.

Where to eat

Try the Karine Shore Restaurant. Hakan Bingol. 0533 312 99 47-0535 480 79 64.

Shining star of the Aegean

Cesme is deservedly popular as a tourist destination. Formerly known as Kyssus, it was named Cesme (spring) by Aegean fishermen after its fresh water springs. Cesme has a good harbour and is near Sakiz and other islands. It used to be a commercial port and was home to the Genoese in the 13th and 14th centuries. As Izmir's importance grew in the 17th century, Cesme's waned.

Yachts replaced galleons

The population shrank during population exchange of 1923, but tourists swiftly replaced them. Today, the galleons from Mediterranean and Aegean countries that used to fill the port in the past have been replaced by yachts. Cesme's biggest draw is its huge options it offers, from accommodation to entertainment to food.

Cesme's castle and houses

So, what can you do in Cesme Enjoy a day at Cesme castle, dating to 1508 and badly damaged in the 1770 Ottoman-Russian war. Recently restored, it also houses the archeological museum. Wander the streets and look at Cesme's few remaining traditional houses as well as the 18th century Ayios Haralambos Church which acts as a cultural centre today. See the caravanserai dating from 1529 built by Sultan Suleyman the Magnificent.

Çeşme Kalesi merkezde gezilecek yerlerin başında geliyor. II.

Alacati, Ilica, sifne Springs and Ildiri

Near Cesme, you can also surf, visit ancient cities, relax in springs, head to the beach, explore and island or unwind in a quiet bay. The best island tour is to the uninhabited Esek (donkey) Island. When Cesme became industrialised, its donkeys were set out to pasture here. 7km from Cesme, AlaCatı is an architecturally beautiful spot with great surfing. Surfing schools for beginners are open year round. 5km away is Ilıca with its 2km beach. sifne has has curative springs and mud baths. Nearby Ildırı is a lovely village with stone houses and the ruins of the city of Erythrai. It is especially beautiful at sunset.

Her sabah limandan kalkıp çevredeki adalara tur yapan teknelerin uğradığı adalar içinde kuşkusuz en ilginç olanı Eşek Adası. Çeşme'ye 7 kilometre mesafedeki Alaçatı gerek bozulmamış mimari dokusuyla, gerekse dünyanın sayılı sörf merkezlerinden biri olma özelliğiyle mutlaka görülmesi gereken yerleşimlerin başında geliyor. Küçük adalarla kaplı sevimli bir koyun kenarına kurulmuş olan Ildırı gün batımlarında kızıla boyanan taş evleri ve antik Erythrai kentinin kalıntılarıyla özellikle akşam üstleri nefis görünüyor.

A day of fun in Mexico

Hollywood movies give the impression that Mexico is populated by men with bushy moustaches wearing sombreros. But Mexico has a lot more to offer than clichés.
Catholic Mexicans
History is made visible in Mexico. Most Mexican cities feature Mayan and Aztec ruins. One hour from the capital, the ancient city of Teotihuacan is worth a visit. After the Mayan and Aztec eras, Mexico was occupied by the Spanish for 300 years, up until the 1800s. As a result, most Mexicans are Catholics. Mexico boasts some stunning Spanish architecture. The cities of Morelia and Guanajuato are UNESCO World Heritage Cities. Morelia is a calm town with lovely two-story Spanish-style houses made from local stone, a stunning cathedral and a verdant square. The towns of Guanajuato and Dolores Hidalgo are synonymous with the struggle to liberate Mexico from the Spaniards. Guanajuato became wealthy during the Spanish occupation due to its rich veins of silver. The magnificent Teatro Juarez and subterranean main street are of particular note.

A warm welcome

Mexico's glorious history is equalled by its natural beauty. With its blue waters and sandy beaches, the resort of Cancun on the southern Yucatan peninsula is the most popular summer destination. Once a sleepy resort, its beach is now lined with 5-star hotels. Tourists spend the day sun tanning or sightseeing. The nearby Mayan cities of Tulum and Chitchen-Itza are worth seeing. At night, tourists head to the bars. Senor Frog is a particular favourite. Other popular summer resorts include Acapulco, Puerto Vallarta and Los Cabos. The Mexican cuisine is as hot and spicy as its nightlife. Try mole, a special sauce made of 40 different spices. The most popular dishes are tacos, enchiladas, pollo con mole and tamales. In some regions, live insects, crickets and worms are eaten!

A picnic on the river

Mexicans love the good life. They are artistic people who enjoy drinking, eating, dancing and music. Here, it isn't considered rude to be late. In fact, being late is the norm! We have Mexico to thank for Mariachi and Salsa music and dancing. Mexico also has beautiful local crafts and has produced many famous artists. The famous Mexican painter Diego Rivera was born in Guanajuato. His works capture the independent, colourful spirit and troubled history of the country. Don't leave the capital without having had a picnic on the Xochimilco River. Sip a bottle of Corona beer and munch on some spicy treats as you float down the river accompanied by Mariachi musicians.
