Ethnicon manufactures minimalist, plain kilims made from old kilims collected throughout Anatolia. These kilims were originally used as tent curtains, sacks, trunk covers and floor coverings. Ethnicon's kilims are the blue jeans of the carpet world: durable, practical and stylish. They are also the opposite of touristic. Ethnicon's high quality raw material kilims mostly come from Sivas, Malatya and Antep and are from 25 to 50 years old. In addition, they weave new kilims to order in a wide range of sizes.
Each kilim is a unique work of art
Once the kilims are collected, they are first cleaned and ironed before being cut into pieces. These pieces are then arranged into new kilims, each of which is a unique work of art. The kilims come in an infinite variety of colours and sizes. Ethnicon kilims derive their simple beauty from their rich Anatolian colours. Every possible shade of brown, green, red, orange, beige and blue is on display. Sadly, not all of the kilims are dyed with natural dyes as this technique has been slowly disappearing. However, you can find all-wool kilims dyed with natural dyes. But you'll be pleased to hear that all the kilims are hand woven. Ethnicon kilims are mostly sold in the United States and Europe in large stores specialising in design products. The old weave kilims costs 220 dollars per square metre while the new weaves cost 140 dollars per square metres.Ethnicon: Kapalıcarsı Takkeciler Sok. 58-60. Tel: 0212-527 68 41. www.ethnicon.com
