Patara surrendered peacefully to Alexander in 332 B.C., thus sparing itself from destruction. It remained an important port when it was under Roman rule as crops harvested in Anatolia and bound for Rome were stored here and then shipped abroad. Today, one can visit the massive grain warehouse. Patara, together with Delos, was one of two important Roman oracle centers. The ample temple ruins give creedence that the God Apollo was born here.
The town maintained its significance through the Byzantine era. It is said that Patara is the birthplace of St. Nicholas. However, the harbor silted up over time, which kept ships from dropping anchor. Approaching Patara, you will see a number of Roman monument tombs as well as several Lycian sarcophagi. Keep walking through the sand and oleander bushes and you will reach a well-preserved Corinthian-order temple. At the base of the slope is a theater (ca. 147 A.D.) half-buried in the sand while the Temple of Athena is situated on the hill above the theater.
Patara is 78 km from Fethiye. Turkish Airlines flies daily to Dalaman Airport at 8:10, 17:05 and 22:00. You can board a service bus to Fethiye, then board another one for the Patara bus station. Otherwise, rent a car or take a taxi from Fethiye.
